Irene “Smokie” McGee was a well-known person in the South Los Angeles community.
Everyone recognized her – they knew her name, greeted her, and were generally kind.
However, a guy named Elvis Summers noted that after dusk arrived, people appeared to lose interest in the woman’s well-being.
Summers knew McGee was a homeless 60-year-old woman (he met her one day when she knocked on his door seeking for recyclables to cash in for money), but he assumed she would at least have a box to sleep in at night.
Summers’ heart shattered as he realized she could never get a full night’s sleep, much alone any basic safety. He felt driven to fix the situation and make a difference. He couldn’t stand it any longer.
Summers told ABC News, ‘I began asking more questions about her to understand what her story was. I discovered she had nothing, not even a cardboard box. She was practically sleeping in the dirt, and all I wanted to do was provide her with a nice environment in which she could at least receive a decent night’s sleep.’
‘Then I asked her, ‘What would you think if I built you a little house?’ I suppose she thought I was insane. I noticed on the internet that people were building these little houses. I’d done construction previously, so I felt it’d be simple – I could handle it.’.
Summers said, ‘We are all human. Someone’s sister, grandma, or children may be out there. She was quite appreciative. She’s a sweetheart who claims that “no one has ever done anything for me. She seems to be a different person today than when I initially met her. She now seems to be really content.’
As long as the little house was relocated to a new location every 72 hours, the city agreed to support the idea and the house.
So when he came to this realization, he was surprised to see that people all throughout the nation were constructing small houses.
Thanks to his previous construction experience, he decided to go ahead and build a small house just for McGee to live in.
He went to his local home improvement shop and paid around $500 on the materials he would need to construct the house. It was only five days later that he was able to present the final product to the woman. Summers is unquestionably a selfless and exceptional person!
