In 2017, a 7-month-pregnant woman and her family visited a restaurant in Marysville, Washington. A waitress suddenly stopped her from entering.
Charisha Gobin was expecting twins when the restaurant refused to let her in because of her pregnancy. She was angry when she realized why they had stopped her.
Gobin took to Facebook after the bizarre encounter and uploaded a photo of herself at the restaurant. People were taken aback when they learned why the restaurant declined to serve her.
On a Sunday night, Gobin and her family dined at the Buzz Inn Steakhouse in Marysville, Washington. She was looking forward to spending the evening with her family.
A hostess, however, stopped her from going inside after noticing her large belly, which her black crop top couldn’t cover. She said:’I’m sorry, but you can’t be here with that clothing.
Gobin was unsure whether the waitress was serious, so she questioned whether she was joking. The waitress surprised her by saying she was serious.
The waitress informed her that the restaurant had a code of not serving food to customers who arrived shirtless or without shoes.
She shared a photograph of herself taken outside the restaurant on Facebook.
The restaurant’s management had established the rule to conform with health code restrictions. The waitress informed Gobin that anyone wearing a crop top would not be permitted to enter the restaurant.
The pregnant woman marched out from the entrance when the waitress told her she wouldn’t be allowed in because she couldn’t take the humiliation. She said:
‘It was just because my stomach was bigger and protruding. But I don’t think there would have been any issues if it had been someone else.’ She shared a photograph of herself taken outside the restaurant on Facebook. She was dressed in a long skirt and a black crop top.
Gobin wanted to show her outfit since she thought she looked nice and that the restaurant should have let her eat there. Gobin and her family drove to another restaurant after leaving the Buzz Inn Steakhouse, where the employees did not refuse her service. She remembered:’I was dressed in a shirt.” It came with sleeves. I didn’t even have any chest.’
The expecting mother was confused as to why her crop top was not classified a shirt. She had the impression that the restaurant personnel had an issue with her belly.
Following the mother’s Facebook post, several persons expressed their support for her. They believed she was mistreated by the restaurant employees and that her clothing was acceptable.
After reading the comments on her post, Gobin felt completely overwhelmed. She hadn’t anticipated so many people to rally around her and recognize her body shame. She said:’It’s really absurd. In the first place, I was humiliated.’
The Buzz Inn Steakhouse made an apologies on behalf of a 20-year employee. They claimed they had set no regulations in order to make their visitors feel uncomfortable.
The restaurant stated that its employees would be trained not to ‘overly enforce a regulation’ on guests and make them feel bad.
They also claimed that the waitress used her best judgment when she refused to let the woman into the restaurant. They said she was not understand the mean of purpose.
Their statement, however, did not explain how Gobin’s crop top was in breach of the health code. They also refused to clarify whether they would treat others in the same way they handled the pregnant woman.
After enduring the worst, the pregnant woman gave birth to two beautiful twins, a boy and a girl, soon after, leaving behind all the painful experiences.
It’s not appropriate to judge someone based on their physical appearance. Because of her pregnant tummy, the restaurant should not have refused her admittance. Do you believe the restaurant’s management is to blame? We’d love to hear your thoughts on this story!
