Setting up a picnic or park BBQ involves a lot more than one might believe. Of course, you’ll need to provide the food as well as anything else you’ll need to prepare it.
Then there’s the matter of bringing dishes, bowls, and utensils. With all of this gear, it’s all too easy to overlook one crucial item: a knife.
This could get you into trouble with guests who are ready to eat their watermelon, but it doesn’t have to.
It turns out that all you need to cut a watermelon open is a good ol’ quarter.
And chances are you have one in your pocket right now. I know that seems insane, but there’s video proof of how successful it can be.
This is how you do it.
To begin, hold the coin vertically in one hand with the edge facing the watermelon shell.
Then bang your other hand against the coin, which should embed the coin in the watermelon.
You may have to strike it a few times to get it firmly wedged. Then lift the coin and push it into the edge of the watermelon hole you’ve formed.
As you continue to do this throughout the watermelon, try to keep the cut in a straight line while spinning the coin.
You’ll be back where you started your first ‘cut’. You’ll need a few minutes to get to this position, but you’ll make it.
As you continue, push your coin deeper into the cut, widening the aperture. Place your hand over the line once it’s as deep as you can make it.
It’s now time to get down to business. Chop your melon like a karate master.
It may take a few tries, but you’ll ultimately be able to split the entire thing in half.
In no time, you and your picnic companions will have plenty of watermelon to enjoy.
