His two daughters were saved by the quick actions of a 23-year-old father in Mchgan, who rushed into his burning house to save them.
One afternoon in July, Ray Lucas and his girlfriend Sh’Ann Brown left their two toddler daughters with Ray’s mother while they went grocery shopping at a corner store.
A blaze had already broken out in their Eastponte home when they arrived back at the scene, with their baby twens still inside.
The 23-year-old father dashed out of the burning house and searched for his 18-month-old daughters after witnessing the disaster.
When the young couple returned to their Eastpointe home after a 15-minute absence, they found it engulfed in flames.
I had to get my babies out of the house, he said. ‘That’s what I was thinking at the time.’
To get down to the basement, Ray relied solely on his recollection of the building’s three-level floor layout and made his way there.
He had one daughter standing on her crib while his other daughter lay peacefully on hers, and I couldn’t help but notice.
Because of the smoke and flames surrounding them, Lucas believes his daughters were in sheer panic during the incident.
Two of Ray’s children were snatched from the bushes by Ray. With his hands tightly clutched around their necks to shield them from the thickening smoke and flames, he made his way back up the stairs to the top floor.
I couldn’t speak. I was completely engrossed in my task. I dashed into the house to get my children. ‘ To paraphrase the Rays natve: ‘I did everything any other father would or should do.
Meanwhile, Ray’s mother was in a state of fear and fled the house, leaving the two babes at home while she called for help.
Rescuers from the fire department were still on their way to the house, which continued to be ravaged by the fre.
However, Ray made it out of the woodwork and returned the two babies to his mother, who was delighted to see them.
But Ray’s bravery didn’t end there. His niece, who was on the second floor, was also saved by him.
He asked the little girl to jump out of the window with the assurance that he would catch her because the house was no longer accessible. In Ray’s arms, the girl followed what he said and remained unscathed.
Both of the hero dad’s ears, as well as the right side of his face and neck, were scorched to the third degree by the fire.
Serious burns were also inflicted on his two daughters, and they were treated at the Children’s Hospital of Mchgan.
His entire family’s property was taken away from him in the fire. More than $286,000 has been raised for Lucas through a GoFundMe page set up by Lucas’ aunt, with the help of more than 8,000 supporters and donors.
