‘Is the baby alright? Tell me the baby is okay, please. After leaping from the second story of a flaming house while carrying a 6-year-old daughter in his arms, Nick Bostic immediately posed that question.
The 25-year-old Lafayette, Indiana, pizza delivery driver is being hailed as a hero after rescuing 5 children from a house fire while he was driving by.
A one-year-old infant and three teens, ranging in age from 13 to 18, who had been awakened by his cries, were waiting for him when he got upstairs.
Shaylee Barrett, 13, told the Purdue Exponent, ‘For a moment I didn’t grasp anything, but my sister went upstairs with the baby in her hands and yelled at us to get up because there’s a fire.’
‘And I was so perplexed for a moment that I froze and lay there. At that point, Nick was downstairs helping us when we went down.
The kids informed Bostic that their 6-year-old sister wasn’t with them when he asked if everyone was present.
According to a statement from the Lafayette Police Department, ‘He ran back into the burning house without hesitation.’
Bostic compared the interior of the residence to ‘going into an oven’ and said it was like ‘hell.’ Because the smoke was too dense for him to see through, he had to rely on his ears to hear the girl’s terrified screams.
When he finally grabbed her, he tried to leave the house but got disoriented, so he walked back upstairs where the smoke was less dense.
He was unsure of whether he would perish along with the girl at this time. He claimed to have a ‘strange peace’ while knowing he would pass away at that same moment in an interview with Dave Bangert. He continued, ‘You just have to work as quickly as you can.
The girl’s ankle had become twisted in a cord from the blinds when Bostic tore the curtains off a bedroom window, he told Fox News.
He immediately untangled her before ‘punching a window with his bare hand to break it open.’
To soften their fall, Bostic leaped out of the window and fell on his side. Bostic fell to the ground after sprinting to the firefighters. Firefighters can be seen putting a tourniquet on his arm in the bodycam video.
In the video, Bostic says, ‘I can hardly breathe.’ The baby is fine, he then inquires. Tell me the baby is okay, please. He is given off-camera assurance that the girl is okay.
Thankfully, according to the police press release, the girl was ‘miraculously mostly unhurt.’
Bostic was taken to the hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation, burns, and an arm laceration.
Over $200,000 has been received through a GoFundMe account set up by his cousin to assist with his medical costs.
Bostic, who has since been discharged from the hospital, informed news organizations that ‘he’s recuperating fine.’
The Lafayette Fire Department believes the house fire was started by a bucket of ashes on the porch that wasn’t completely extinguished, according to the Lafayette Journal & Courier.
The parents had gone out on a date night, and when they got home, they discovered that emergency personnel had surrounded their home. Bostic has received their gratitude and been welcomed into their family, they have said.
