The 20-year-old guitarist first taught his 55-year-old mother to play the drums after being inspired by the two-piece rock group The White Stripes.
His father, who is 60 years old, initially picked up an electric bass two months later. The family’s band, appropriately called ‘Mommas Boy,’ features Ryan as the lead vocalist blasting tunes, Andrea Stokes keeping time on drums, and Lyndon plucking the bass—all quite competently.
The trio has been performing three to four times a week, and in April, their Who Would Have Thought album was made available on the band’s Spotify page.
Ryan, a comedian from Hamilton, Scotland, quipped, ‘Their extremely eager youngster pestered them to establish the band. ‘I wanted to play music during lockdown because I had nothing to do.’
Mum was eager to learn to drum like Meg White since she liked the White Stripes, especially Meg White.
Ryan claims that after a brief session on the drum set in the garage, ‘Sure enough she had a powerful rhythm within an hour and was ready to play within three hours.’
Within hours of picking up instruments for the first time, both of the middle-aged newcomers were appearing in videos on TikTok. They quickly adjusted to the rockstar lifestyle.
The group took over the internet’s hearts immediately, gaining 72,000 TikTok followers since its creation and 700,000 views.
Students Ryan and his parents, who both work in local government, are astounded by Mommas Boy’s popularity as they are by the internet support they receive.
Ryan told SWNS news that Ryan’s mother is referred to as the ‘mumma drummer’ at her place of employment and that Ryan’s father is ‘constantly amazed by the response online, after initially thinking social media was a very negative atmosphere.’
The band, who does not yet have a record label, utilizes Ryan’s bedroom as a studio and finished their album in just one month thanks to music editing software.
Since getting their huge break online, the band has also performed live, with a lot of anxiety before each event.
However, after our first performance, they were ecstatic and eagerly anticipated the next one. ‘Mum constantly said she wasn’t good enough to play a live show, and Dad wasn’t optimistic,’ the singer recalls.
The family now gets to spend more time together and enjoy their shared love of music even more. This is an incidental benefit.
‘We always got along since we both love music. Now that we both enjoy making music, we can connect,’ Ryan joked.
We have the same same taste in music; my father’s live performance DVDs and vinyl records were my early musical influences.
There may be video of me being taken home from the hospital shortly after my birth, with The Rolling Stones playing in the background.
Ryan claims that the band members haven’t yet disagreed on the band’s music, but Andrea is quickly establishing herself as a rock star.
‘Of all of us on TikTok, she seems to have the most fans. She might also be the one to drive a car into a swimming pool if we ever went on a trip, I have a feeling! ‘
