Nujud Ali became one of those who were married off at an early age. Her family was poor, had many children and all girls.
So the parents didn’t think long and just decided to lighten their burden. Nujud was only 9 years old at the time. A marriage contract was drawn up.
Parents were not surprised by the fact that the groom was over 30 years old. The contract stipulated that the husband should take care of the girl as a father.
A man could fulfill his marital duty only when the girl turned 18 years old.
But, of course, the terms of the marriage contract meant nothing to him. And Nujud’s life turned upside down, she was just a child. But she knew her rights very well.
The girl went to court, and a famous lawyer who fights for women’s rights agreed to help her. They filed for divorce because the prenuptial agreement had been breached.
The court’s decision was in Nujud’s favor. She had to pay a fine of $200. The girl did not have such money, so the lawyer paid the money.
Nujud returned to his family, but they did not accept her back. The girl really wanted to study, but no one would let her.
She then wrote the book I’m 10 and Divorced, highlighting the injustices that happen to girls like her. She is now 16 years old, married with love and became a mother of two children.
