The role of Rebecca that Alley played on the enduring and widely watched sitcom Cheers made her the star of the show.
After Shelley Long left the show in season 6, a new female lead was introduced. The character quickly gained popularity among viewers and critics, earning Alley an Emmy and a Golden Globe.
Many of Alley’s former Cheers coworkers paid the actress respects after her death, expressing their recollections and calling her ‘bright,’ ‘unique and amazing.’
While viewing an old episode of Cheers on a plane, Ted Danson, who portrayed Sam Malone in all 12 seasons of the popular comedy, expressed his appreciation for Kirstie Alley’s performance in particular.
Danson said, ‘It was the episode where Tom Berenger proposed to Kirstie, and she kept saying no, even though she desperately wanted to say yes.
Her portrayal of a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown was both heartbreaking and hilarious.
After getting off the plane, Danson revealed that he had learned of Alley’s passing. He sent his condolences to her family and said,
’I am so sad and so grateful for all the times she made me laugh. To her children, I extend my love. They are well aware that their mother had a pure heart. She will be missed.’
Cheers waitress Carla Tortelli’s co-star Rhea Perlman also recalled her with affection.
‘Her happiness in existing was limitless. When she joined the Cheers cast, we grew close quickly, Perlman remembered.
She adored children, and my children did too. She planned treasure hunts for our sleepovers at her place.’
She welcomed the whole cast of the show, as well as their families, to her lavish Halloween and Easter festivities.
She aimed to make everyone feel welcome. She had a great love for her kids. I’ve never encountered somebody even close to her. I’m so grateful that I got to know her. She will be sorely missed by me.’
After Alley passed away, Travolta also paid the actress tribute on Instagram, writing, ‘Kirstie was one of the most special relationships I’ve ever had.’ ‘Kirstie, you are loved. I am confident that we shall cross paths again.’
