American John Corcora worked as a school teacher for almost two dozen years, unable to read or write.
Both his colleagues and students do not suspect that the experienced educator suffers from a rare disorder that prevents him from mastering the skill of reading and writing.
How an illiterate man was able to teach for so many years, he confessed to himself years later, when his adventure was revealed.Words are not sorted into letters in any way.
John spent his childhood in New Mexico, he was brought up in a large family. As the man remembers, he started speaking late, but always sought knowledge.
‘When I went to school, I really wanted to write and read well, not lagging behind my older sisters in anything.’
It was good to change everything in the first grade, because they only asked us to behave like an example:
to sit humbly, not to talk, to listen carefully to the teaching, to go to the toilet. We were taught to read.
The boy carefully listened to the teacher’s explanations, but no matter how hard he tried, he could not understand how to put those letters into words.
Opening the textbook, he had almost the same feeling as an ordinary American would have if you put a paper in front of him, where everything is written in Chinese. John turned eight, nine, ten, and he couldn’t read or write.
The child was transferred to the backward group, and he was very ashamed. His parents were also worried about it, but the teacher said optimistically.
This phrase the teachers repeated at the end of each school year, moving him to the next grade.
John hated school and went there every day as a truant because he felt like an outsider in class. However, success came from where they did not expect.
‘I have always loved sports and had excellent athletic data. I successfully participated in competitions, so the teachers started to turn a blind eye to my learning problems.
I also had mathematical abilities.I thought very well in my mind, I easily remembered the school schedule.Besides, I found a great common language with my peers. The girls were crazy about me,’ he said.
Gradually, the teenager learned to be cunning. During the school inspection work, he simply rewrote from his classmates’ notebooks everything that was written by them, not understanding what he was writing.
After finishing school, the boy entered college. And there he continued to deceive students and teachers.
For example, in some subjects he managed to get exam tickets because they were the same year after year.
Once during the exam, he wrote the questions off the board, not understanding what they meant.
His friend excelled in his class and had a crush on a girl but didn’t have the courage to admit it.
John promises his fellow student to help him if he solves his problems. It cannot be said that John enjoyed his deception. He was ashamed, he was in pain.
And at night he roared like a child. The boy was afraid to ask for help from those around him, because he did not believe that it was possible to help him.
For the sake of justice, it should be noted that he can still write, but approximately as a first grade student does.
With great effort, he got a few words on paper and also wrote his name. But he couldn’t read. When John graduated from college, there was a shortage of professors in the country.
It seems crazy, but he went to work as a teacher. Never once was he accused of cheating and he believed that he would succeed in the job.
In high school, John Corcora taught a variety of subjects: physical education, social studies, and even typing.
It turned out that he was good at reprinting the texts.John did it quickly and without mistakes.
During the lessons, the teacher almost never wrote anything to the children on the blackboard, instead he watched films with the children, discussing them, as well as holding discussions.
