Seniors at a high school raised a quarter of a million dollars for their lovable 80-year-old janitor who was forced to come out of retirement after his landlord raised the rent.

GoFundMe was used to collect the money; the initial aim was $10,000 but it quickly grew into something bigger.

Some seniors at Callisburg High School, Texas, observed that the school had a new janitor named ‘Mr. James.’

Mr. James is an 80-year-old retiree whose rent had increased by $400 and he needed a job to pay the difference.

A group of young people, confident in their ability to use modern technology to aid a less-than-young person,

came up with the idea of starting a GoFundMe to enable Mr. James, 80, to resume his normal activities.

Marti Yousko, a high school student, remarked, ‘It’s crazy to see something that, we knew people would have wanted to help, but we didn’t anticipate it would blow out.’

One senior, Greyson Thurman, released a TikTok video of Mr. James cleaning the halls, and he also started a GoFundMe to help Mr. James maintain his current standard of living.

The number of my followers (I have 2,000) was sufficient to spread the news, said Thurman.
The majority of the $10,000 was donated by students.

Principal Jason Hooper exclaimed, ‘It’s really incredible. You know of the need that was met due of three kind kids, but of all of our students who have stepped in to meet that need.’

In mid-February, when the fund drive was still in the five-digit range, local news covered it, but as it passed $270,000, it was shut down in order to deliver the money to Mr. James as soon as possible.

People from all across the country and the world contributed to the students’ fund to help them implement their clever concept and to wish the temporary janitor a happy retirement.
