One of Hollywood’s best-known stars, Richard Gere, comes from a simple family. The actor grew up in a big, poor family on a farm in Syracuse.

Doris, his mother, met Homer Gere where she grew up, in Brooklyn. In 1945, two people who had been friends since they were young got married. They moved to North Syracuse to raise their five children.
