Life will inevitably include change. The goodbyes that frequently come with change are almost never simple.
Emotions might surface when someone close to us passes away, when a romantic relationship ends, or when we quit our jobs.
During his final shift on the job, Michael Schlie, the former police chief of the Deer Park Police Department in Ohio, received a unique send-off.
All three of the long-serving department member’s children gave him an emotional ceremonial last call.
The YouTube video features a split-screen perspective. Michael can be seen responding to his children’s
touching comments on the right of the screen by moving to the left of the image. When his daughter starts
speaking a few seconds into the video and says, ‘my father,’ Michael realizes he probably won’t be able to control his emotions.
After setting the walkie-talkie on the desk, he reclines in his chair and listens to the tender message of love.
The video starts, then Michael’s son takes over after around 20 seconds. Michael is filled with emotion as he lowers his head to the ground.
The call is ended with Michael’s kid saying, ‘We are so proud to call you our dad.’ What more could a parent want for than to know that all of their efforts and sacrifices were valued by their kids?
‘Thank you for being a role model, a leader, and most importantly, my dad,’ Michael’s daughter responds.
After the department announced on social media that Michael’s last day of employment would be May 1, 2023,
that heartfelt note was sent. After 32 years of service to the agency, he retired from his position.
