When they were playing one day, Vera, the youngest kid of Matt Uber, passed unconscious and had no pulse.
Despite having no formal first aid experience, Matt frantically tried to revive her using techniques he had seen on his favorite TV show.
Fortunately, he was able to use indirect cardiac massage and artificial respiration thanks to his memories, and by the time the ambulance arrived, Vera’s heart had started to beat again.
Further tests revealed Vera had an unidentified, rare genetic disease that results in arrhythmia.
Matt realized the importance of having the appropriate first aid training after giving the circumstance some thought, and he has plans to enroll in CPR lessons.
To treat Vera’s condition, a pacemaker was implanted, and the family now keeps a first aid package on hand.
Matt hopes that his story will serve as a reminder of the value of having a crisis plan in place and will encourage others to take first aid courses rather than rely just on television programs.
