Following the Golden Globes last month, the costars of ‘Only Murders in the Building’ gave rise to romance speculations.
However, a representative for Short has now told PEOPLE that they are ‘very good friends, nothing more.’
Meryl Streep and Martin Short went out to supper together almost a month after dismissing reports of a romance.
Costars from The Only Murders in the Building were seen on Wednesday evening leaving Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica, California, after dinner with pals.
For the evening, Short,73, wore a gray sweater and a black blazer, while Streep,74, wore black jeans, a hot pink button down, and a red jacket.
Fans thought that the Hollywood stars were close during the January Golden Globes, which sparked rumors.
However, a representative for Short told PEOPLE at the time that the two ‘are just very good friends, nothing more.’
Short mirrored Bill Maher’s joke on his Club Random podcast around the same time, saying, ‘We’re not a couple, we are just very close friends.’
Then 68-year-old Maher said, ‘Well, you should because a power couple is the most powerful thing in Hollywood.’ Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie found success with it, as did Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.’
Actress Nancy Dolman and Short were wed from 1980 until her death in 2010 from ovarian cancer. Together,Katherine Elizabeth (40), Oliver Patrick (37), and Henry Hayter (34), are the couple’s children.
In 2019, he said, “Our marriage was a triumph, so it’s tough.’ to AARP: The Magazine. ‘She passed away in 2010,
but we still keep in constant contact. You know, it’s like, ‘Hey Nan.’ What would be her response to this or that choice, particularly one that involved our three children.’
He said, ‘I think that when people pass away, they zoom into the people who loved them.’ ‘The idea that it just ends, and don’t speak of them — that’s wrong….to me, she’s still here.’
In the meanwhile, Streep and her 45-year marriage officially announced their separation to PEOPLE in October.
In a statement at the time, a spokeswoman for Streep told PEOPLE, ‘Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart.’
