On The Voice, Reba McEntire broke down in tears when a contender devoted their audition to a departed loved one.
Chance the Rapper and Reba McEntire turned their chairs in response to William Alexander’s stirring
rendition of Lizzy McAlpine’s
‘Ceilings’ during his audition on Tuesday night’s episode of the singing competition series. I was truly singing that song in memory of my grandfather, who passed away the previous year.
After his performance, Alexander remarked, ‘He always said that he believed in me and it’s just crazy being here now.’He was then asked, ‘Were you thinking about your grandfather?’ by 68-year-old McEntire.
He just ‘pictured him hearing this and seeing me do this,’ Alexander clarified. I was just really happy to be here.
Fantastic. I think you did a great job, but you’re going to have someone with you all the time, so I’m getting choked up and I’m going to have to start talking extremely high.
McEntire said, ‘Your voice is a beautiful gift, and I’d love to have you on my team.’ She then wiped away her tears.
Alexander claimed that when it came time to choose a coach, his ‘gut’ urged him to choose with McEntire.
‘I am tremendously excited whenever I get to work with young kids. I wanted William because of his smooth voice, which set him apart from anything else I own, she remarked.
After the show, Alexander talked candidly about his decision.
‘It seems absurd that Reba became emotional.’ I instantly felt a connection to her at that point, and I knew I had to choose Reba,’ he remarked.
