A client says, ‘it’s our turn’ as the veteran struggles to pay for his groceries.

Enlisting in the military is a brave decision that requires significant sacrifice for the good of our country.

People risk everything on this courageous and altruistic adventure in order to further the common good.

We should all be appreciative of their dedication to the welfare of our nation, particularly in regards to our veterans.Sadly, many of these warriors who have sacrificed so much come home to confront great suffering.

The good news is that we are able to change things. This touching account of a veteran’s hardship

and the unanticipated generosity she encountered serves as a powerful reminder of the strength of community solidarity.

Under Dave Hall’s direction, the Fox 5 Surprise Squad set out to bring happiness to a nearby Albertsons store in sunny Las Vegas.

Their idea was straightforward yet effective: they would pay for random consumers’ groceries. The responses were amazing since this unexpected act of compassion made everyone’s day better.

The employees of the store, who witnessed these moments of happiness firsthand, proposed clients who would most benefit from the Surprise Squad’s generosity as they continued their giving binge.

The happiness these acts of kindness brought to each person’s face really struck one cashier, who was on the verge of tears.

Stephanie, a wheelchair-dependent disabled veteran, was one of the patrons. While shopping for

food for her dogs and herself, she told Dave that she was on her final $50 and wasn’t sure how she would make ends meet.

Stephanie was really appreciative of the news anchor’s generous offer to pay for all of her groceries, as she was happy to assist.

Then Dave saw the man standing behind Stephanie, named Larry. Larry, who Stephanie’s husband initially thought to be her spouse, turned out to be a fellow veteran and acquaintance.

After losing three brothers to the cold 16 years prior, he founded “Bones For Blankets,” a charity that provides blankets to homeless veterans.

Larry had learned from this unfortunate tragedy how important it is to share resources and lend a helpful hand to others.

Larry clarified that because Stephanie’s husband was a truck driver and was usually away, he would often take her to the locations she needed to go.

Larry, in spite of his personal financial difficulties, was committed to helping Stephanie.

All he could afford was a bottle of dish soap and a piece of candy, so he stood in the checkout line with them.

Dave pushed to buy Larry groceries because he was touched by his predicament. To the veteran, he said, ‘You served us.’ ‘Now it is our turn to serve you.’

Tears filled Larry’s eyes as he followed Dave back into the aisles, putting far more food and supplies in a cart than he had anticipated that day.

Larry, who had been independent since he was a teenager, was overwhelmed by the generosity shown to him and shocked that a stranger would make the extra effort to purchase him lunch.

He said he would pay Dave back, but the reporter told him he had already fulfilled his obligation.
‘Larry, you deserve this because we try to do good things for good people,’ Dave added.

Larry said that he had never spent so much on groceries as they completed the checkout process. He had a look of obvious thankfulness and emotion.

He gave Dave a heartfelt thank you and walked out of the store with food and a memory of goodwill that would last a lifetime.
