The song ‘Africa’ by Toto has been covered around ninety times. Heavens knows there are a gazillion more that aren’t on file.
It’s just one of those timeless tunes that, despite numerous spins, never loses its unique quality.
In actuality, a lot of these adaptations are still as classic as the original. Consider the Angel City Chorale’s wonderful performance (below).
The vocalists’ use of their hands to simulate the sounds of rainfall before any music begins is what really sets this performance apart.
The group’s little pitter patter as they rub hands together comes first. That drizzle intensifies with snaps at the conductor’s signal,
then rains with thigh claps and coordinated jumping.then coming to an end when the opening notes start to play.
It’s a very straightforward creative decision, but it manages to add a lot.
Of course, the singing itself is amazing.
