Dick Van Dyke won a Daytime Emmy Award this past weekend, making history. For his portrayal of Timothy Robicheaux on Days of Our Lives, the comedian and actor won outstanding guest performer in a daytime drama series.
He did this to become the oldest actor to win a Daytime Emmy Award, at ninety-eight. I feel like a television midnight spy.
Van Dyke quipped as he and his wife Arlene Silver stood on stage, ‘I brought this lady up because she’s the love of my life, but because she was in the show she played the cop who arrested me.’
As the oldest nominee ever, here I am. It’s unbelievable to me. All my life I was playing old men. I would have taken better care of myself if I had known I would live this long.
‘It’s unbelievable, but I’m 98 years old. This truly caps off an 80-year career in the industry,’ he said.
Van Dyke has been entertaining the public for many years, from Mary Poppins to The Dick Van Dyke Show to Bye Bye Birdie, and he has no intention of stopping anytime soon, even at his advanced age.
When informed that he was just one letter away from earning EGOT status, he responded, ‘Give me a shot at it.’ ‘Hope it’s not a posthumous thing.’
