Through the performing arts, those who have had a long-lasting influence on American culture are honored with the Kennedy Center Honors.

The Kennedy Center chooses a wide range of performers from around the globe each year in recognition of their outstanding contributions to performing arts.

Johnny Cash was one of the five individuals that received recognition in 1996. None of the people there have likely forgotten that incredible night.

One of the most important musicians of the 20th century and an American legend was Johnny Cash. He began his musical career in 1954, having been born in Arkansas in 1932.

His distinctive style of combining blues, country, rock & roll, and folk music elevated him to the status as one of the greatest performers of all time.

Over the course of his five-decade career, he received numerous honors, including eleven Grammy Awards.

One by one, performers took the stage to pay tribute to Cash by performing some of his most well-known hits, as Cash sat in the crowd surrounded by visitors like former President Bill Clinton.

Ezoic Rosanne Cash, his daughter, was the last performer. She began by singing “I Walk The Line” and gave a heartfelt account of her father. Later, everyone participated in the timeless song “I’ll Fly Away.”
