The heartfelt performance made the judges cry, but it was made much more sad when Jones described the song’s inspiration: his late wife, Melinda Trenchard. <\/p>\n

\u2018My wife was dying of lung cancer, so I said if she needed me I was always there,\u2019 Jones added. <\/p>\n

She pleaded, \u2018Don’t fall with me, you’ve done everything you can, keep going.\u2019 When I heard the song, it seemed written for the situation. Beautiful song.\u2019<\/p>\n

59-year marriage
\nYoung Tom Jones and Melinda Trenchard met. <\/p>\n

Jones met Melinda in a Radio 2 documentary and remarked, \u2018What great legs she has!\u2019<\/p>\n

The 16-year-old high school sweethearts married and had a son. Together for 59 years. <\/p>\n

It was a long marriage for a celebrity, but it wasn’t a fairytale. Jones, a world-famous sex symbol at the height of his fame, said he once slept with 250 women a year. <\/p>\n

Melinda kept faithful despite his infidelity since they had an arrangement.<\/p>\n

Melinda reportedly said, \u2018I feel alive when [Tom] enters through the door, day or night.\u2019<\/p>\n

After nearly 60 years of marriage, they were a significant part of each other’s life. <\/p>\n

Melinda died in 2016 after a \u2018short, tough\u2019 lung cancer struggle. Jones was heartbroken and unsure if he could continue singing.<\/p>\n

\u2018I won’t sing some tunes. But you must have perspective. Emotional? Put it in the song, he said. \u2018It was difficult. I tried to sing for months. I tried some songs with my band. It was emotional.\u2019<\/p>\n
