<\/p>\nActress, singer, and animal rights advocate Doris Day got her start in show business during the heyday of Hollywood. <\/p>\n
She is regarded as a renowned performer who enjoyed success both as a musical artist and as an actress in major motion pictures. <\/p>\n
She portrayed the title character in \u2018Calamity Jane\u2019 and co-starred with James Stewart in \u2018The Man Who Knew Too Much” by Alfred Hitchcock. <\/p>\n

Day is best known for the movies she made with Rock Hudson, particularly \u2018Pillow Talk,\u2019 for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. <\/p>\n

The daughter of Alma Sophia and William Joseph Kappelhoff, Day was born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff. <\/p>\n
Day became interested in performing and dancing at a young age. She started out as a singer, penning the <\/p>\n
popular song \u2018Sentimental Journey,\u2019 and then rose to fame as an accomplished actress. After suffering a leg injury in a vehicle accident as a youngster, she started polishing her singing talent. <\/p>\n
Ella Fitzgerald was Doris’ idol at the time, and by 1946, she had followed in her footsteps by becoming the <\/p>\n
highest-paid female band vocalist in the entire world. Surprisingly, Fitzgerald later covered one of Day’s tracks.<\/p>\n
Day saw immediate success in the performing world, and as she started to dominate romantic comedies.<\/p>\n

She advocated before Congress for the welfare of animals and founded a number of animal welfare organizations, <\/p>\n
including a horse sanctuary. It is obvious that she is a real person with a loving heart and a cheery disposition.<\/p>\n
Day, who believed she was two years younger throughout the majority of her time on earth, discovered at the age of 95 <\/p>\n

Day developed pneumonia and ultimately away; her body was cremated. She requested \u2018no funeral, no memorial, and no (grave) marker,\u2019 according to her manager and close friend Bob Bashara. <\/p>\n
Evidently, Day had a difficult time talking about death. Bashara clarified in his People interview that \u2018She detested <\/p>\n
dying, and if her animals had to be put to sleep, she was unable to be with them. She had a hard time comprehending her death.\u2019<\/p>\n
He clarified: <\/p>\n
\u2018When I would suggest that we take care of her pets after she passed away, she would respond, \u2018I don’t want to think about it,\u2019 <\/p>\n
to which I would reply, \u2018Well, you just take care of them.\u2019 When her will was drafted, she had a number of them, <\/p>\n
and she wanted to make sure they were taken care of. She disliked discussing the deaths of the dogs.\u2019<\/p>\n
The reason Day asked not to have a funeral, according to Bashara, is unclear, but he speculates <\/p>\n
that it may have to do with her personality. I believe it was because she was a really shy person, he said.<\/p>\n
