She told People, \u2018If you tell someone you’re going to be somewhere at a specific time, you show up. Mom and Daddy always told me that. <\/p>\n

By 1990, she was already incredibly famous and had just become a first-time mother to her son, Shelby. <\/p>\n
Despite having a famous mother, she was aware that she would need to exercise caution in order to raise him properly.<\/p>\n

The GRAMMY-winning singer and her ex-husband, Narvel Blackstock, worked hard to teach their son, the professional race car driver Shelby, humility and respect for others. <\/p>\n
She noted that many people had told her that \u2019you would never know\u2019 that he was the recipient of so many blessings.<\/p>\n

And I brought him on the road with me with the best nannies,\u2019 she gushed. I would fly home from concerts to wake him up, drive him to school, <\/p>\n
and pick him up when I could not be there in person. We agreed to play until I had to leave for a concert later that evening. It was Shelby that I yearned to be with. Still do.\u2019<\/p>\n

The country singer has also spoken publicly about her son’s ADHD. When he was younger, he struggled to even finish a short book, but now that he’s in his 30s, he devours literature. <\/p>\n
\u2018He\u2019s always trying to improve and do better. His father did a fantastic job as well. Shelby is a gift from God to me. We\u2019re very close. <\/p>\n
Before meeting Shelby, I had become quite self-absorbed. The spotlight may have been on you before, <\/p>\n
but then along comes a cute little person who needs you to keep them safe, feed them, love them, and educate them.<\/p>\n
