<\/p>\nBorn in Brooklyn, New York, Barry Manilow was the son of Irish truck driver Harold Keliher and Russian Jewish mother Edna Manilow. <\/p>\n
Edna forced her husband to alter his last name since she didn’t want their son to be called Kelliher. <\/p>\n
Following a search of the family registry, they discovered Pincus, a Jewish uncle of Kelliher’s who lived in the 1800s, and Kelliher adopted his name. <\/p>\n
Manilow’s parents split when he was a baby, but he legally changed his surname to Manilow just before his Bar Mitzvah. <\/p>\n
Manilow’s passion for music began at a young age, and it was his strongest suit. He has also acknowledged that his stepfather and grandfather encouraged his passion in music. <\/p>\n
He attended the New York College of Music to further his education in the area of his interest.<\/p>\n
