<\/p>\nAlthough none of us get to pick our family when we are born, we do have a choice in who we choose to consider family. <\/p>\n
When Robert Carter, a foster father, made the decision to adopt his entire brood of five siblings, he did exactly that.<\/p>\n
Carter, 29, had experienced years of foster care in Ohio and was well-versed in the feeling of being cut apart from loved ones. <\/p>\n
At twelve, he went into the system. Years passed before he was ultimately reunited with his brother and younger sister.<\/p>\n

When Carter was granted custody, the children he adopted\u2014Marina, Makayla, Robert, Giovanni, and Kiontae\u2014were residing in three different foster homes.<\/p>\n
According to caseworker Stacey Barton, \u2018Mr. Carter was the only foster parent willing and able to adopt all of the children,\u2019<\/p>\n
as she stated to WCVB-5 TV. \u2018His early experiences have helped him understand how important it is to keep siblings together.\u2019<\/p>\n
Carter was already fostering the three brothers before they were adopted. He knew there was only one thing to do when he set up a meeting between the girls <\/p>\n
and their foster mothers so the kids wouldn’t lose contact with one another and saw how upset they were all by the conclusion of the visit. <\/p>\n
Although Carter was a single father and the duty was too much for him to handle alone, he was committed to keeping these children together. <\/p>\n
It isn’t always simple. Even though you get to pick your family, it doesn’t mean that they will get close to you right away. <\/p>\n
For now, Carter is focused on gaining his kids’ trust and has faith that love will follow suit eventually.<\/p>\n
Carter remarked, \u2018[I’m] making memories to replace a lot of the bad ones.\u2019 \u2018I tell them every night <\/p>\n
