The Chicago nu metal band Disturbed is not exactly well-known for its love of the soft folk music <\/p>\n

that was popular in the 1960s and 1970s, even if the band is well-known for its hard-hitting rock songs like \u2018The Sickness.\u2019<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, during a live performance on Conan in 2016, the multi-award winning heavy metal band covered Simon and Garfunkel’s classic song, <\/p>\n

\u2018The Sound of Silence,\u2019 and it was very amazing. They published their album Immortalized in 2015, and this cover is from it.<\/p>\n

Over the years, bands have constantly covered the Billboard song that has been around for decades. Actually, since the song’s 1965 premiere, <\/p>\n

more than sixty different performances of the renowned folk-rock piece have been recorded by artists, according to Smithsonian Magazine. <\/p>\n

More modern interpretations can be found in the performances of artists like James Blake, who released his electronica version in 2015. <\/p>\n

Still, the cover appears, at least, reasonably fitting for Blake. Regarding Disturbed, it is hard to imagine a time when folk-pop and the metal band’s name will be mentioned together. <\/p>\n

The band’s appearance at Conan, though, only goes to show how varied the alternative metal scene is\u2014more so than we usually realize.<\/p>\n

On the Conan stage, frontman David Draiman puts on an absolutely incredible performance, backed by a full string orchestra, a piano, and two enormous kettledrums. <\/p>\n

The folk-rock hit that Simon and Garfunkel made becomes something entirely different as a result. However, this does not imply that Draiman goes all metal on the song; in fact, <\/p>\n

Disturbed’s version of the song notably lacks electric guitars. On the other hand, Draiman’s distinctive baritone gives the song an even darker vibe. <\/p>\n

Furthermore, Draiman approaches the high notes with an astonishing level of comfort, even when he is forced to deal with them. <\/p>\n

It is enough to say that Draiman is a well-respected musician in addition to being a talented metal vocalist. <\/p>\n

His contribution breathes new life into a beloved American classic and adds something new to the song’s rich musical heritage. He performs this with skill and grace.<\/p>\n

Perhaps fans of the band shouldn’t be surprised by this as the group enjoyed such popularity in the early 2000s. <\/p>\n

In 2000, the band launched their breakthrough song \u2018The Sickness,\u2019 which sent them skyrocketing to the top of the charts. After reaching the Billboard 200 list, <\/p>\n

the album was eventually certified five times platinum, according to AllMusic. The band saw further <\/p>\n

commercial success in 2015 when they released their album \u2018Immortalized,\u2019 which likewise peaked at the top of the charts. James Christopher Monger writes in the AllMusic review of the 2015 album, <\/p>\n

which features a cover of The Sound of Silence, that the record offers listeners \u2018late-2000s heavy <\/p>\n

rock piled high with bottom-heavy riffs, piston-like percussion, and big modern rock radio-ready choruses.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018The band impresses with their unabashed theatricality and strong vocal turns from David Draiman in their shamelessly melodramatic reading of Simon & Garfunkel’s Sound of Silence, <\/p>\n

which effectively utilizes the pared-down piano and vocal treatment that helped Gary Jules resurrect Tears for Fears’ Mad World,\u2019 he writes on the album cover. <\/p>\n

\u2018The Light\u2019 is an anthemic and refreshingly upbeat mid-album gem.\u2019 His favorite song on the album is \u2018The Light.\u2019<\/p>\n

However, in order to fully appreciate Draiman’s \u2018strong vocal turns\u2019 and the \u2018theatricality\u2019 of the cover, <\/p>\n

it is worthwhile to see the performance directly. Folk music enthusiasts and metal music lovers alike will find plenty to like in it.<\/p>\n
