Neena, 32, had no idea that one day in 2015 would turn out to be one of her most memorable days when she went to work.
Neena is a member of the train dispatch staff at the crowded Birmingham New Street train station, which serves as a transportation hub for numerous commuters each day.
She saw a young woman at the far end of one of the platforms as she went about her responsibilities around the station, though.
Neena was drawn to the woman because she was immobile while perched on the edge of the platform.

‘No one interacted with me at all. Neena noted that the woman was still and had a fixed gaze. She was fixated on the railroad tracks for a considerable period of time.’
Neena was uneasy since she had a gut feeling that something wasn’t right.
‘After observing her for a while, I realized I needed to decide whether to approach her or not. I didn’t want to aggravate things,’ she remarked. Neena made the wise choice to approach the girl and initiate a conversation.
‘In order to avoid aggravating her further or drawing attention to her, I turned my radio down and took off my high visibility jacket as I walked up to her. At the time, I had no idea what I would say, only that I had to say something. Anything.’
My name is Neena; how are you doing? Neena addressed the woman as she moved over to stand by her, but she received no answer. The girl ignored Neena even more, keeping her eyes on the tracks and avoiding eye contact.

Neena tried another strategy since she was afraid she was going to jump. Neena stated to Cosmopolitan UK, ‘I saw she had her makeup done really professionally, so I remarked on it and told her I adore watching YouTube lessons.’ I just wanted to start a conversation, I know that sounds dumb.
Neena continued her one-sided talk while quietly alerting her coworkers to the fact that the young woman was still not responding.
In fact, one of her coworkers had already noticed what was happening and had called the British Transport Police for help in addition to the signal box to request that they turn the light off.
‘You and I are the only ones here.’ The girl on the edge of the platform finally heard Neena say. I just want you to know that you can trust me and that my only goal in being here is to assist you. I want to make sure you’re okay.
Neena remembered, ‘At that point, she simply started crying.’ ‘I can still clearly recall that. I’m not okay, she said to me.
The young woman then started to panic. “It was so awful that she went into panic mode. I advised her to focus solely on me and not worry about anyone else.

If she required privacy, we could find a quiet spot away from the station to have a cup of tea. However, she was crying a lot and was in a panic.
Neena could tell from the woman’s intermittent cries that she had lost her father. The station worker stated, ‘She indicated she wasn’t handling it very well.’
In the middle of the platform, where the British Transport Police seized control, Neena was able to gently cajole the suicidal woman away from the edge.
Neena then made an effort to see if she was okay, but due to confidentially, the police were unable to provide any other information.
While Neena is unaware of the identity of the girl she chatted with that day, she is aware that her actions may have saved her life.
It’s difficult to accept, Neena told Cosmopolitan UK, that you might have saved someone’s life. There’s a constant worry that speaking up would worsen the situation, but you have to try because there isn’t much you can say to enrage people more.
People merely desire to be aware of your concern. It can really change everything. I find that to be really compelling.
