Both in real life and on the big screen, Delta Burke excelled as a beauty queen. On the set, she fell in love with and wed her co-star Gerald McRaney. They have been married for 33 years.
Burke rose to fame in her twenties as the former beauty queen Suzanne Sugarbaker on the television program ‘Designing Women.’ The Florida native received two Emmy nominations for herself.

In 1987, McRaney was cast in the sitcom as Dash Goff, Sugarbaker’s ex-wife. They fell in love off-screen
and wed in a grandiose ceremony in 1989. 500 friends, including their co-stars from ‘Designing Women,’ attended the wedding.
Burke was a real-life beauty queen. She was Miss Florida while attending Colonial High School in Orlando. Yet, she has battled her weight her entire life and has experienced body shaming.

Her and her acting career suffered as a result of others making fun of her for growing weight. Her career took a serious hit,
and she lost touch with her well-known co-star, Dixie Carter. In the midst of all this, Burke lost the will to live.
The author made an effort to reduce weight, but she found it difficult because she was frequently teased and made fun of, and because the popularity of her show was slipping.
Burke requested that an episode regarding her weight increase during Season 4 of ‘Designing Women’ be created by the show’s creator,
Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, so that she could speak candidly about it. The episode’s title, “They Shoot Large Women,
Don’t They?’ portrayed Burke being teased by classmates at her high school reunion because of her girth.

One of them continued, ‘I hear she’s the new ‘Save the Whales’ poster child. Another person added, ‘I hear her previous husbands left because they couldn’t eat enough.’
Despite the fact that the actress was made fun of on the episode, she was nominated for an Emmy. It didn’t stop people from making fun of her off-screen, and as a result, her career plummeted.
Burke’s friendship with ‘Designing Women’ co-star Dixie Carter deteriorated as her confidence declined.
When they co-starred in the short-lived comedy program ‘Filthy Rich,’ in 1982, their friendship officially began.

Nevertheless, their friendship was caught in the crossfire as Burke dealt with problems with ‘Designing Women’management, and they had a falling out.
After years of silence, Carter finally spoke up about her tense relationship with Burke in June 2000.
The actress, who was Burke’s maid of honor at her marriage to McRaney, spoke candidly about their ‘close’ relationship.
To be told, I adore Delta. I always have, and I always will. I don’t think it should be made public that we are friends and will be reuniting.
Carter said she was ‘happy’ for all the good things in her life during the interview and thanked her estranged friend and hubby.

Burke heard this and started crying. That is what she said, right? Really? I simply assumed that everything had fallen apart,” the producer said.
Carter and Burke, according to Burke, had a wonderful connection and Carter had been ‘nice’ to her. And what happened between us was the most terrible aspect of all that happened, she added.
The ‘Women of the House’ alum’s entire public image changed as a result of her weight issues. She
transitioned from feeling like the press’ favorite target to becoming their sweetheart, according to Burke’s former co-star Jean Smart.
Together with the press, Burke was frequently made fun of by disc DJs. Even a song named ‘Delta Dawn, how many pounds have you gained?’ was created by them.

Burke called the negative media coverage a ‘crisis’ because it included private information affecting her and her husband, McRaney.
They were also interested in her career, which she referred to as ’vicious,’something she wasn’t used to.
Burke claimed that despite her best efforts, they managed to ruin her ‘good’ reputation. She remembered
how everyone would talk about her as if she weren’t there, and that even on set she couldn’t escape the abuse. Burke mentioned:
‘I can still picture myself on the sound stage with a mob of people trying to decide what to clothe me in.
They would speak of me as if I didn’t even exist. How will we handle those hips, you ask?

Burke suffered from depression as a result of all the criticism she received regarding her weight, and she used medication
and therapy to treat it. Her panic attacks got worse as she started working again during the third season.
The brunette was taken to the clinic by Carter, where she was sent to the hospital since she was mentally and physically worn out. At that moment, Burke disclosed:
‘The nurse said I appeared to be a wounded animal. I wished I were not still alive. When I was weighed, I was 170 pounds, and all I wanted to do was die.

There were claims that Burke had been suspended and was causing issues on the set by the fifth season of the show.
There were rumors that if she didn’t lose the weight, she might lose her job. But co-executive producer Bloodworth-Thomason
insisted the reports were untrue, saying, ‘It’s like when you acquire weight, you have no right to live in America.’
Burke was fired in 1991 due of the strong conflicts that existed behind the scenes. As she left,
she struggled but tried to recreate her Sugarbaker persona in a return series called ‘Delta’ in 1992. The following year, in 1993, ABC cancelled the series.
The sitcom ‘Women of the House,’ created by Thomason and based on Suzanne Sugarbaker, premiered on CBS in 1995. Even so, it was dropped from the air after just three months.

Burke departed ‘Designing Women’ in 1991 at 215 pounds. She assumed her Type 2 diabetes was caused by her weight.
In addition to being harassed by the press and frequently criticized for her weight, Burke’s six-month marriage to McRaney attracted attention.
The actor from ‘Major Dad’ was allegedly cheating on his wife due to her size, according to the media. The ‘Sordid Lives’ star disclosed:
‘He was alleged to be feeding me. He said I was too big. Where we’re encountering issues is there. That he’s evicting me.’

Burke stated that Thomason prepared a ‘wonderful script’ that moved her husband to tears after he suggested that she include her weight in the presentation.
Even though the gossip was genuine, Burke and McRaney continued to work on their union, which was on the danger of disintegrating
due to the negative publicity. Yet, her beloved husband, who went by the nickname ‘Mac,’only had good things to say about her.
McRaney had always supported his wife, even driving to be with her when she was depressed, and couldn’t give a damn about ‘how obese’ she got.
Burke claimed that she weighed 170 pounds the day of the wedding, but her future spouse seemed unconcerned.
He didn’t give his weight a second thought. He told me he didn’t care, but I obviously didn’t believe him.

The majority of the time, things don’t work out for males who are ‘complete jerks’ and content with ‘trophy’
spouses, according to McRaney. Yet, you must love the person you desire as your wife. He continued, ‘Plain and simple.’
When his future wife was 150 pounds, McRaney first met her. Burke said she was able to keep her weight steady for a year. Her husband still adores her in spite of this, saying:
She is much smarter and more resilient than I am.
Burke’s spouse had always loved her, despite the challenges she had faced, including her weight issues, up to that point.
He loved me even when I reached the size of a house. When I was a brunette, he loved me. It wasn’t until I went back to being a
brunette that he let me know he didn’t like it. Through my good and bad times, he has loved me. Even though it doesn’t, he still thinks my body is amazing,’ she concurred.
Burke knows she can always count on her husband to help her, even though it seems like she finds her spouse handsome and capable of defending herself.

Harry Thomason, the executive producer, shouted at the cast and flung items at them in his office.
She tried to leave after telling him she didn’t like it, but he stopped her. Till he realized Burke’s spouse was heading to their production office, Thomason continued his ‘abuse.’
Even during trying times, the couple held strong. Burke lost her job in 1995, and the couple struggled financially. They sold their home in Pasadena and moved to New Orleans, which helped their union.

Burke was able to restructure her life, which resulted in positive changes. She started a plus-size clothing business and toured the country with her book, ‘Delta Style,’ in 1997.
Burke, who is currently 66, is described as “beautiful” by admirers as she enjoys life with her husband and stepchildren.
At the middle of the 2000s, they shared a home with Burke’s mother, who commended McRaney for helping her overcome hardship.
Burke called her husband ‘wonderful’ because his weight gain over the years had no effect on him. But,
he did pay special attention to her, giving her dietary advice and giving her insulin shots. McRaney told his wife that it gave him a sense of caring for her.

Burke stated that they were both healthy and that she was ‘glad’ about it because she thought her health would get better. The television celebrity said she would remember that time in her life.
Others have also noticed Burke’s wonderful new appearance. Despite leading a quiet life now, she and McRaney were last seen in February 2023, and she was allegedly different.

She is great, one fan remarked on social media, and she looks stunning, according to another. She is ‘brilliant,’
according to a third user, who also observed that it is great that she started her own clothes brand, showcasing her excellent sense of style.
Burke has withdrawn from the public eye. She doesn’t have a website and rarely ventures out in public, but her husband continues to perform.

Burke and McRaney have been partners for three decades and got married on May 28, 1989. From his two prior marriages, he has three kids: son Angus, daughters Jessica and Kate, and a daughter Kate.
McRaney’s first wife was Beverly Root, whom he wed in 1966 and later divorced in 1971. Then, in 1981, he wed Pat Moran; however, the two subsequently got divorced in 1989.

In November 2014, McRaney and Burke made their public introduction in Studio City, California. After
falling on the set of her pilot, ‘Counter Culture,’ in 2012, and forcing the production to stop, she started to disappear.
Burke declared that everything was in order despite the lack of employment possibilities. ‘I’m just not feeling it at the moment,’
