An adoptive child who was desperate to see his biological mother had no idea that she had been living in the same place all this time.

At St. Marks Hospital in Salt Lake City, where both Benjamin Hulleberg and his biological mother Holly Shearer worked, they were likely both inside the facility at the same time.

His biological parents urged him to search for the woman because meeting her had always been one of his most cherished fantasies and desires.

In an effort to find a clue—a cousin or second cousin who could take him on the trail—he sent letters, registered with an adoption registry, and underwent a DNA test.

He was unaware that Holly Shearer, who had given up her baby for adoption when she was just a young adolescent, had never forgotten about him.

Benjamin’s adoptive family members, from whom he was adopted, frequently sent Holly letters and photos of Benjamin.

She also discovered Benjamin on Facebook. She made the decision to keep a low profile because she did

not want to ‘throw a wrench’ into what she perceived to be a successful and fulfilling early adulthood.

But in the end, Shearer sent Benjamin a text message wishing him a happy birthday, turning his world upside down.

It was a day I had been anticipating for the last 20 years of my life, and it was incomprehensible to believe that it was actually going to happen, so I started crying. There was a lot of data to sort through.

He decided that enough time had passed and quickly asked that a reunion be scheduled, insisting that the two bring the whole of their families along.

After an emotional encounter, Shearer and Hulleberg learned they both worked at the same hospital.

Hulleberg volunteered at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, while Shearer worked as a medical assistant at the Heart Center.
