Mary was born and reared in the UK, whilst Jake is from Trinidad. Mary was enrolled in school to become a typist while Jake was a member of the US Air Force serving at Burtonwood Base.

Mary lived close to the Burtonwood Base and both she and her husband were students at the same technical college.

The strong bond and sincere affection that existed between Jake and Mary was evident to both of them right away. They began interacting more and visiting each other’s homes more frequently.

On the other side, this occurred in the 1940s, a period of intense racial unrest and derogatory attitudes

toward inter-racial unions. Mary, on the other hand, refused to let the circumstance change how she felt about Jake.

After the war in the rest of the globe was over, Jake was invited to go back to Trinidad. The two of them were unable to stop talking when Jake returned to Trinidad.

The pair wrote numerous love letters to one another in order to express their affection and enthusiasm

for one another despite everything. Eventually, Jake found his way back to the UK, where he asked the woman he had come to love to marry him.

Although she answered categorically in the affirmative, her family had conflicting sentiments about her choice:

‘When I told my father that I was going to marry Jake, he threatened me by saying that I would never step foot in this home again.”

Even though her father vehemently opposed the marriage, Mary went ahead and wed Jake. Following their

marriage, the couple faced harsh criticism from both society at large and their own families.

I used to always say, ‘Look, I have to tell you something before I can invite you to my home—my husband is black,’ before I would ever open my door to a new acquaintance.

Things began to change for the great couple as the world started to mend and nations started to develop after they had endured everything together for a while.

The couple’s love for one another is still as strong as ever after 71 years of marriage.
