Everybody desires to have a typical life. Isabelle and Abby Carlsen, twins, want that. Since they were born as conjoined twins, things weren’t always typical for them.

The two infant girls were joined at the chest. They claim that it was quite tough for their parents to decide to separate them.

It is quite difficult to separate conjoined twins, especially in Isabelle and Abby’s situation. Conjoined twins can be separated with the help of doctors, but each case is different.

In regular surgeries, surgeons repeat the techniques they’ve practiced and trained on numerous occasions.

Conjoined twin surgery varies greatly from case to case because each is unique. Doctors had to devise a plan

to safely separate them because of the intertwined nature of their organs. This required numerous doctors and months of planning.

Medical teams from The Mayo Clinic practiced numerous times, according to CBS News. Each organ had its own medical team, as well as a surgical team.

In essence, it took more than twelve hours and involved more than a dozen specialized teams. Doctors carried out the difficult

surgery that might potentially give the girls their independence after months of meticulous planning.

Despite the parents of Abby and Isabelle being concerned about the alarming statistics at the time,

A group of about 17 doctors worked together on May 12, 2006, to offer Abby and Isabelle a chance to live freely. It took almost 12 hours to separate the conjoined twins.

The decision was a significant leap of faith for the family because at the time, the Star Tribune reported that 60 percent of conjoined twin operations ended in fatalities.

Abby and Isabelle were still getting along quite well in grade school in 2016, ten years after their amicable divorce.

Given that they were split apart at the age of six months, it makes sense that they claim they have no memory of being conjoined.

They don’t remember being linked at the chest, but they display actions that point to an intrinsic recollection.

They occasionally catch themselves doing the identical hand motions they used to when they were conjoined.

‘Every night we look in our room’s mirror and wonder, ‘How do people confuse us?’’ In an interview with CBS News Minnesota, Abby remarked.

The twins were unstoppable, their primary school teacher Tiffany Moos told the magazine at the time.

‘Nothing can stop them, I can’t imagine how healthy they are. Academically, they are at a high level, and socially, they have friends everywhere.

The twins appear to be thriving as high school students and enjoying their youth based on their Instagram account.

Isabelle enjoys posting pictures of herself, her twin Abby, and their friends on social media.

They both compete on the gymnastics team, and like any other teenagers, they go to music festivals.

The Carlsen twins have developed into stunning young women with no outward signs of their formerly combined lives.
