John Lewis’s Christmas Commercial Reminds Us to Allow Customs to Grow

Christmas is a time for fun activities, traditions, and spending time with friends and family.

All of those yearly rituals—decorating the tree with loved ones, watching a beloved movie with a Christmas theme, or cooking a special dinner—became independent events.

Trying to force someone to follow a tradition or engage in an activity is usually ineffective. The outcome

will most likely resemble something from ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,’ rather than being enjoyable and producing priceless memories.

A single seed is contained in the strange-looking container. The little guy tending the plant and nervously

monitoring its development soon develops an attachment to and investment in the ‘perfect Christmas tree.’

As with trees and plants, something slowly starts to sprout and grow out of the pot. Before long, viewers get to meet Snapper, a cunning yet endearing Venus fly trap.

For the young boy, the plant becomes a part of the family and his best friend. Together, they design Christmas trees and look

at pictures of them. Snapper even attempts to imitate a traditional Christmas tree by remaining motionless and grasping a vivid yellow star.

However, the tree grows too large and unintentionally begins to cause havoc and headaches. Soon after being banished from the family, Snapper finds himself outside in the cold.

The plant peers into the house as the family decorates what most would consider a traditional Christmas tree, despite its location and the problems it causes. Snapper is seriously injured.

Sensing that something is wrong, the boy decides to solve the problem by involving Snapper in the holiday festivities.

The child eventually leads the entire family in following directions. While celebrating Christmas in a non-traditional manner may seem strange, the practice actually developed spontaneously.
