In Healey, Alaska, a man named Gareth Jackson was suddenly saved from a potentially fatal scenario by a grizzly bear he had assisted a year before in an unexpected turn of events.
The story started when a hunting party decided to kill a rogue grizzly bear that was causing trouble in the Hills outside of Healey.
Gareth Jackson was concerned about the worsening situation after seeing the hunters return, bloodied and scared.
He made the decision to act independently because he was afraid of the violence and bloodshed that would soon ensue.

After giving his apology, Gareth left the area and made his way home, intending to evaluate the matter early the next day in the woods.
His objective was to obtain information and make a well-reasoned case in the ensuing, unavoidable town council meeting.
Truckloads of armed men arrived in the town as expected, ready to hunt down the supposed threat. Despite Gareth’s growing
concern for the bears going into hibernation, especially the females who were going to give birth, the mob killed three bears over the course of the following week.
Once again taking matters into his own hands, Gareth went into the forest to get a personal look at the issue.
When a gang of ferocious hunters approached the laboring female grizzly, he stepped in to stop them from hurting the bear and her young.
In the mountains, Gareth encountered a new set of issues a year later. He was trapped in a little avalanche,

suffering from a twisted ankle and a fractured leg, and he couldn’t get rescue by radio. He was shocked to see that the grizzly bear he had saved had returned, as if it had remembered him.
The grizzly stopped short of assaulting Gareth and, amazingly, sat on one end of the fallen tree that was trapping him.
This unanticipated gesture gave Gareth enough leverage to release his legs. Then the grizzly moved on, leaving Gareth stunned and overcome with thanks.
This remarkable story highlights the ability for understanding and collaboration between animals, challenging preconceived ideas about relationships between humans and wildlife.
The tale emphasizes the value of compassion and respect for the animal kingdom while serving as a moving reminder of the precarious balance that exists between humans and the natural world.
