The transition to online education has been challenging for students nationwide. After four years of diligent study, many students thought there would be no actual graduation ceremonies at all.
Nevertheless, a select few, including students of John Butler, have been granted permission to have ceremonies that take place in person.
An elitist regulation regarding acceptable footwear led to the unfortunate revelation that one of his classmates would not be permitted to walk at graduation.
He went over to Butler, who had already verified the policy with an organizer. This led him to do what he saw to be a ‘no brainer.’ He took off his shoes and gave them to his student.

When Butler shared the incident on Facebook, a lot of people liked it. He uploaded a picture of himself wearing
socks and the student next to him wearing shoes that were two sizes too big and a purple graduation gown.
‘The final minute before they close the doors to graduation,’ the teacher wrote. In a state of terror, the younger brother approaches me on foot.
‘Mr. John, I can’t graduate because I don’t have the appropriate shoes for the dress code,” he exclaims.
He claims the woman down there told him his shoes prevented him from walking to receive his certificate.’
Butler proceeded to see if his student had really been informed he couldn’t walk by going downstairs ‘in total disbelief’.
He added in his post, ‘Yeah, she tells me the same thing.’ ‘At that point, it seems obvious to me—a ‘no more questions asked scenario.’
I handed him the shoes I was wearing.” The terrifying experience quickly turned into a memorable and humorous one:
‘Now for the hilarious part… My shoes were two sizes too big for him, so he had to slide his feet across the platform like Sleestak to get his diploma when his name was called. We laughed heartily.’
Since its initial upload on May 20, 2021, a large number of people have liked the post. More than 20,000 people have reacted to it, and 2,800 have commented.
Also, it has been shared more than 18,000 times. Commenters on Facebook expressed their sincere gratitude for Butler’s gesture of generosity.
A user remarked, ‘Thank you for setting a great example and blessing not only this young man but many others who read this post.’
‘I’m so glad he knew who to go to for help,’ said another. I appreciate you being there for him, Mr. John.
Much obliged to you, sir. Still more people praised him as a hero for showing compassion towards the young pupil.
