The United States’ oldest resident has reached the ripe old age of 116.
Edie Ceccarelli became the second oldest person in the world on Monday, February 5, when she reached 116 years old, according to the Gerontology Research Group.
The California town of Willits, located approximately three hours northwest of Sacramento, was Ceccarelli’s childhood home.
Her parents were immigrants from Italy, and on February 5, 1908, she was born into a family of seven.
In 1927, she earned her diploma from Willits High School. After her 1933 marriage to Elmer ‘Brick’ Keenan, the couple settled in Santa Rosa and welcomed a daughter into their family through adoption.

Ever since her 100th birthday, Edie has extended an invitation to the community to join her in celebrating, and this year was no exception—a significant milestone.
The day before her birthday, on Sunday, the community members took part in an automobile parade. In addition, Edie received a carrot cake for her birthday.
One of Edie’s caregivers, Perla Gonzalez, stated that when she found out the cake would be carrot cake, she became quite happy. ‘Oh really, honey?,’ she exclaimed, beaming.

‘We make sure she knows how special she is every year on her birthday,’ main parade organizer Suzanne Picetti told USA TODAY.
