On Sunday night, Joni Mitchell gave her first-ever performance at the Grammy Awards.
Alongside Brandi Carlile, Blake Mills, Allison Russell, Lucius, Jacob Collier, and Sista Strings, the 80-year-old sang her 1966 smash song ‘Both Sides Now.’
Despite having received 18 nominations and 10 Grammy Awards—her tenth coming this Sunday for best folk album—Mitchell has never taken the stage at the awards presentation.

After suffering a brain aneurysm in 2015, Mitchell withdrew from public life. Despite surviving
the brain aneurysm, the vocalist of ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ claimed she had to relearn several fundamentals.
‘You know, I’m watching videos on the internet to see where I place my fingers. What an aneurysm knocks out is incredible, even chair mobility!.. Everything needs to be learned again.
Among the numerous musicians who assisted Mitchell in returning to her peak performance was Carlile.

When Mitchell played at the Gorge Amphitheater in Quincy, Washington, in 2023, Carlile remarked, ‘[I’ve] watched one of the most miraculous things I’ve seen in my life, and now you get to see it.’
In twenty years, it was Mitchell’s first headline show that required tickets.
