The last few years have been historic for the British monarchy, and on September 8, 2022, at Balmoral, Queen Elizabeth II, the country’s longest-reigning queen, passed away tragically.

As numerous members of the royal family gathered to be by her side in her final moments, it was a tragic day for them all.

Charles III, Elizabeth’s eldest son, took the throne on the same day. He gave his first speech to the United Kingdom as its new monarch just one day later.

Less than two years later, on February 5, 2024, Buckingham Palace announced that Charles had been diagnosed with cancer, devastating the royal family once more.

Charles was born on November 14, 1948, while Elizabeth was still a princess. During his early years,

Charles defied tradition multiple times by going to school rather than receiving private tutoring, which was customary for the royal family at that time.

In addition, he made history by being the first royal to graduate from Trinity College, Cambridge, with a degree in anthropology and archaeology.

After becoming the Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester in July 1958, he subsequently enlisted in the Royal Air Force.

For many years, Charles’ private life has been a prominent subject, especially after his marriage to Princess Diana and the ensuing divorce.

Charles has, nevertheless, made a significant effort to improve his reputation by supporting a number of nonprofit groups.

Charles is also enthusiastic about issues related to young opportunity, the environment, global sustainability, and education.

His efforts paid off, and in the years since he became king, the tide of public opinion has been shifting in his favor.

King Charles III experienced some severe health problems in the beginning of 2024. The queen was scheduled to receive treatment for an enlarged prostate in the hospital the following week,

as initially revealed by Buckingham Palace on January 17, 2024. Charles was described as feeling

‘fine’ and ‘looking forward to getting back to work” by his wife, Queen Camilla, the following day.

Charles had the treatment at London Clinic after being admitted on January 26, 2024. Before leaving after three nights, he was admitted.

But the palace declared that all his previous appointments will be rescheduled to give him enough time to rest and recover.

After the therapy, Camilla reiterated in the days that followed that Charles was ‘doing his best’ before the couple made their first public appearance together on February 4, 2024,

at Sandringham Church. There, Charles lifted everyone’s spirits by waving reassuringly at the assembly.

The solace would, however, be fleeting as terrible news was revealed by Buckingham Palace the following day.

It stated that ‘ diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer” during Charles’ prostate treatment, emphasizing that it was not prostate cancer.

The monarch had ‘commenced a schedule of regular treatments,’ according to the statement, and his doctors had advised delaying his public engagements. The 75-year-old monarch would,

meanwhile, ‘continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual,’ the statement continued.

Though the palace said that Charles was “wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible,’

rumors had already started to circulate about who may take the throne in the event that Charles was unable to perform his duties.

It was widely reported that, should his health permit him to do so, Charles may select delegates from a pool of seven royals.

A constitutional mechanism allows two or more Counsellors of State, who are the monarch’s spouse and the next four in line of succession,

to assume His Majesty’s place in the event that the king is unable to perform his official duties as sovereign on ‘a temporary basis due to illness or absence abroad.’

For Charles, this would entail his brother Prince Andrew, his niece Princess Beatrice, his wife Queen Camilla, and his sons Prince William and Prince Harry. Nevertheless,

Prince Andrew, who was connected to infamous sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and Prince Harry, who emigrated from England to live in the United States with his bride,

Meghan Markle, are not seen as working royals. Additionally, speculation has linked the next two senior

members of the royal family to possible successors to Charles. Prince Edward and Princess Royal Anne are his siblings.

The Counsellors of State are not authorized to carry out important royal duties like dealing with Commonwealth matters,

dissolving Parliament (unless the King specifically orders it to), appointing a prime minister,

or attending Privy Council meetings. They are also not permitted to sign routine documents or accept the credentials of new ambassadors.

But in the initial days following his diagnosis, Charles stayed upbeat despite the rumors. Unexpectedly,

he kept the public informed about his health issues, a move that seems consistent with his image as a grounded king.

This was also made clear by the Palace’s announcement, which gave Charles’ justifications for doing so. It said:

‘In order to dispel rumors and to promote public awareness for all cancer sufferers worldwide, His Majesty has decided to disclose his diagnosis.’
