Although her family of fifteen (12 children plus her parents) may have been regarded as impoverished monetarily, they were not in many other areas of life.

Dolly made it obvious that her ‘Mama’ had worked hard to instill in children an optimistic outlook on life when she said, ‘Kids, if we had some ham, we’d have some ham and eggs…if we had some eggs!’
