An inventive “portal” between Dublin, Republic of Ireland, and New York, USA, was presented last week;
however, due to improper behavior on the Dublin side, it was temporarily closed within the same week.
Gylys, a Lithuanian artist, came up with the unique idea for the gateways.They allow cities—currently New York and Dublin,
with ambitions to add other cities—to share footage with one another via big circular screens via live streaming.
Gylys stated in a statement, ‘Portals are an invitation to meet people above borders and differences and to experience our world as it really is, united and one.’
‘The livestream provides a window between distant locations, allowing people to meet outside of their social circles and cultures, transcend geographical boundaries, and embrace the beauty of global interconnectedness.’
De Róiste, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, repeated this idea, urging both locals and tourists to interact with the artwork and give a warm greeting to the audience throughout the world.
The gateway was welcomed at first, and in the upcoming months, several shows were scheduled on both sides of the broadcast.
But as soon as recordings of inappropriate behavior from Dublin started making the rounds online, the campaign ran into problems.
People have been observed mooning at the New York camera, holding up improper photographs, and using foul language.
As a result, Dublin City Council temporarily closed the gateway as they looked for ‘technical solutions’ to the issue.
The council clarified that the conduct of “a very small minority of people” who behaved inappropriately were the reason for the portal’s removal.
‘While we cannot control all of these actions, we are implementing some technical solutions to address this,’ the council said.
‘We will continue to monitor the situation over the coming days with our partners in New York to ensure that portals continue to deliver a positive experience for both cities and the world.’
Some voiced trepidation, while many others welcomed the concept with gusto. Someone said, ‘It’s a great idea if people had self-respect rather than using it to make a trashy video for likes.’
Furthermore, several expressed worries about how such luxury might affect the environment, emphasizing
that ‘we need to find a balance between innovation and sustainability to ensure a better future for all.’
