The ten-year-old twins Bridon and Christian Hassig and their friend Sam Ebert enjoyed a relaxing summer afternoon in the pool while their father Brad engaged in underwater breathing exercises and prayer.
When one of the twins saw their father had abruptly turned on his side and appeared to be floating in the water, everything appeared to be normal.
When Brad started turning blue from a lack of air, they realized something was amiss. They discovered he had collapsed.
Unsure of what to do, the boys pulled Brad to the side of the pool after becoming alarmed. Brad was first extricated from the water.
They then attempted to use Brad’s phone to contact for assistance, but it was locked and they were unable to access the code.
The guys hurried to a neighbor’s house to seek assistance as one of them started CPR. Unfortunately, the neighbor wasn’t at home, so they took the next best action and honked at a passing car to have an adult dial emergency services.
The guys recalled a scene from The Sandlot where ‘Smalls’ appeared to have drowned at the neighborhood pool but was actually only trying to get a kiss from the attractive lifeguard.
Brad remarked, ‘Physically, there’s no way they should have been able to pull a 185-pound man out of the water like that and to know and do what all of them did, flawlessly as quickly as they did and with no shortage of action.’
