The teacher leaves her job as a teacher, stating, ‘Teaching is similar to being in an unhappy marriage…’

Like all other educators, Amanda Coffman entered the teaching field for the love of working with children rather than for the financial reward.

The Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD) teacher with 21 years of experience ultimately determined

that she could no longer endure the mismanagement and financial issues, and she resigned—on livestream.

The educator was given a three-year teaching contract back in the year 2020, but it was obvious that

this arrangement would not meet the needs of the instructors, who had been working without a contract for more than six months.

Since it was clear that the circumstances would have the greatest impact on the students, Coffman chose to take a stand and resign rather than accept them.

In order to tell her children the news, she attended the SMSD Board of Education meeting in February 2020.

‘Being in an unhappy marriage is similar to teaching. Even though your needs are never met, you keep going because of the kids. You’re not listening, thus our communication has grown strained.

Speaking to the board and officials in this facility is like shouting into the wind, she continues, so I won’t waste my breath.

She emphasizes to both the Board and her students that ‘just because you can, doesn’t imply that you should.’ This is her main theme.

‘I thought that by stepping down in the way that I did, I would be able to speak more forcefully on behalf of the teachers and draw attention to how crucial the teachers are to the students.

Additionally, she added, ‘I had the feeling that I was calling the district’s bluff because they didn’t think any educators would quit.

Teachers still have to deal with the same administrative and financial limitations even though the film was made more than two years ago.
