Despite hardships, John Goodman’s lovely wife of 33 years stood by him, and the couple now lives outside of Hollywood together.

John Goodman should be mentioned while discussing great character actors. Since the 1980s, when his career first started, he has done a lot.

Over 160 productions, including movies and TV shows, have him listed as an actor. A versatile and outstanding actor, Goodman’s work spans a wide range of genres.

Goodman gained fame for his role as Dan Conner in the popular ABC sitcom ‘Roseanne.’ For the part in 1993,

he received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. As the third-most frequent host of all time, he has also hosted ‘Saturday Night Live’ 13 times. On movies

like ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou,’ “The Big Lebowski,’ and ‘Barton Fink,’ he frequently worked with the Coen brothers.

In addition, Goodman is well-known for lending his voice to a variety of kids’ movies, including Sully in the ‘Monsters, Inc.’ series from Disney.

He performed the voices of Pacha in ‘The Emperor’s New Groove’ and Eli ‘Big Daddy” LaBouff in ‘The Princess and the Frog.’

His other noteworthy achievements do not eclipse his ability to bring animated characters to life. One of the greatest actors of all time is undoubtedly Goodman.

Goodman, who was born and reared in Affton, Missouri, relocated to New York City at the age of 23 to pursue an acting career.

In addition to acting, he has always been a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and used to play football.

Since October 27, 1989, he has been married to Annabeth Hartzog. 33 years of marriage is a record, and Goodman has said that his great wife is largely responsible for his professional success.

For innumerable TV viewers, Goodman’s work on ‘Roseanne’ from 1988 to 1997—as well as the 2018 ‘The Conners’ reboot—made him the epitome of the traditional family patriarch.

The sitcom combined drama and humor, and John Goodman’s portrayal of Dan Conner earned him the 1993 Golden Globe for Best Actor.

Goodman’s character in Roseanne undoubtedly reflected certain elements of his personal background.

Goodman has had the good fortune to become an actor who not only excels at what he does but also has a strong capacity to connect with his audience.

However, behind the scenes, he has battled alcoholism. According to The Guardian, he struggled to

deal with his unexpected rise to stardom following his appearance in ‘Roseanne,’ which turned him into ‘tabloid fodder.’

‘It took me some time to process it. It was really out of the ordinary, he said.

Goodman claimed that he further slid into alcoholism during the transition after moving to New Orleans with his wife,

Annabeth Hartzog, to get away from the spotlight and have a chance at a more regular life. He said that

since entering rehab in 2007, he has maintained his sobriety and that his wife has supported him at all times.

He said, ‘It was becoming too much.’ ‘I had been suffering from this illness for 30 years, and it had gotten to

the point that every time I did it, it became more and more crippling. It was either that or die. The time has come to halt.

Goodman’s breaking point came during a particular incident in which he was ‘still drinking’ but ‘still shaking.’

I became so lucky because I was still getting recruited for jobs, but the truth is that I was drinking at work, Goodman said. Goodman continued:

‘I would have slurred speech. I believed I was deceiving others. But when I got drunk, my cheeks would turn blazing red. I merely had a stop sign’s appearance.

After suffering a ‘long weekend’ of drinking, Goodman came to the conclusion that his habit was becoming worse and becoming unmanageable.

He called his wife when he realized he needed assistance. Goodman stated, ‘She made some calls and

she got me into a treatment center.’ And after detoxing there, I made the decision I liked the feeling.

Goodman continued to put his health first and started losing weight while still focusing on getting sober.

He once reportedly weighed nearly 400 pounds, according to Page Six. The actor, on the other hand, started working hard to lose weight in 2007 and kept it off.

‘Back in the day,’ Goodman recalled, ‘I would take three months off, drop 60 or 70 pounds, reward myself with a six-pack

or something, and just go back to my old habits.’ ‘I wanted to go slowly this time. Move and work out. I can no longer afford to remain still as I get older.

The actor continued, ‘It was basically just portion control and ‘I don’t need it’.’ ‘I was just stuffing my mouth with everything.”

Furthermore, Goodman made a debut of his 100-pound weight loss in 2015 at the premiere of his movie ‘Trumbo.’

Given that Hartzog has been Goodman’s wife for more than 33 years, she has undoubtedly played a crucial role in his life.

Goodman told ELLE in 2012 that he met his wife at a Halloween party held at Tipitina’s nightclub. He clarified:

‘I was filming ‘Everybody’s All-American,’’ She strolled up to me at this Halloween party and said, ‘Hello.’ I was baffled as to why someone so attractive was speaking to me.

Goodman went into greater detail about his initial encounter with Hartzog in a 2021 interview on ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers.’

She had a tendency to believe that I was a zombie, so I had a friend of mine maintain tabs on her,

and a year later we began dating, he claimed. Yes, I sort of stalked her from a distance.

Goodman declared he wasn’t a romantic in a 2018 interview on ‘Live with Kelly and Ryan,’ but his proposal tale suggests otherwise.

Hartzog was asked to marry him ‘on the banks of the Mississippi River.’ We actually went to the jewelry store

to acquire the ring before we walked down to the river because we had known it was coming for a long, he added.

In October 1989, Hartzog and Goodman exchanged vows. Their daughter Molly Goodman, who is currently a production assistant in the film industry,

was born the following year. Later, the family moved to New Orleans, Louisiana’s Garden District.

Goodman and his wife are still together now. It is clear that Goodman’s wife has played a significant role in his recuperation over the years, and their romance has endured.
