Joan Irwin has been wearing a bizarre ‘shell’on her head for 37 years. Her daughters, Christina and Cindy,
reported on the Oprah Winfrey talk show that this hairstyle has already become an integral part of their family life.
Christina and Cindy recall that they even had to cancel one of their family trips as children because
their mother was worried about the metal detector at the airport and its reaction to hairpins.

Both already adult daughters grew up near the Adirondack Lake. Today they remember how hard it was for their mother to go swimming with them as a child,
because it always meant that she had to take apart the ‘shell’ on her head. That is why both women asked the presenter to come up with a different hairstyle for their mother.
Christina and Cindy believe that such ‘shells’ were in vogue back in the 50s, and today it is because of the hairstyle that the 63-year-old mother looks much older than her age.
At the same time, they asked Oprah to update her wardrobe, which consisted mainly of coarse cotton and khaki clothes.

Joan expressed her willingness to transform with the help of Oprah, but also asked for the opportunity to tell viewers about her hairstyle, and how she had to take care of her all her life.
During the show, she revealed that she gets up every Wednesday at 5:30 am to begin this time-consuming process.
First, she has to take out the hairpins from last week, then thoroughly wash her hair with shampoo, and then wind the curlers and blow dry for an hour.
The procedure ends with applying a huge amount of varnish to the hair and fixing the hairstyle with hairpins. The whole process takes about four hours.

Three popular American stylists and makeup artists helped change Joan’s image, including Ken Paves, Rita Hazan and Kathy Hyland.
While the three of them discussed what could be done with her hair, Joan said that she felt no older than 50,
even if her daughters say that the “shell” makes her look old. Thanks to the help of three gurus from the
fashion world, Joan’s appearance after that became much more fashionable and modern, and she herself seemed to look younger.

After the three craftswomen had finished their work, Joan proudly took the stage to a standing ovation from the audience.
Cristina and Cindy barely recognized their own mother, but they immediately hugged. The presenter herself, too, apparently, was shocked by such a radical change in image.
And at the end of the show, the famous stylist Victoria Principal announced that Joan, in her opinion,
now looks more like Christina and Cindy’s sister, and not like their mother she has rejuvenated so much.
