A Texas woman named Melba Mebane worked at Dillard’s for 74 years. She never missed a day of work or called in sick during this time.

The 90-year-old Melba can tell you a wonderful story about her time spent working at Dillard’s. She was also praised by many who had worked with her throughout the years.

Melba started her professional career at the Mayer & Schmidt department store in Tyler, Texas. She worked as an elevator girl there.

Melba continued to work there after Dillard’s acquired the company in 1956 and did so until she decided to retire in July 2023 at the age of 90.

Melba worked as a salesperson at Dillard’s. While working on the sales floor, she adored seeing all of her friends.

Melba spent six months working as an elevator girl before being promoted to the men’s clothing department and subsequently to sales.

Melba raised Terry Mebane as a single mother while pursuing her career. Terry states that his mother was asked to cover for someone who called in sick,

so she moved from the men’s clothing section to the cosmetics aisle. She proved herself capable and has never ventured outside of the cosmetics aisle.

One of the many stories about Melba’s incredible time at Dillard’s is the one about the gift baskets she was able to sell.

The sales of gift baskets weren’t particularly good at the time, but Melba found a way to make them.

She stepped out from behind and started talking to people on the ground, and eventually sold all the baskets.

Manufacturers started using Melba to market their products once they realized how good a salesperson she was by giving her items like perfume bottles.

Terry said her mother loved to give away the perfume she possessed, which included many bottles from upscale brands like Chanel and Coco. He recalled:

He nicknamed her the cosmetic bootlegger and gave her the nickname «our pastor» since she would give samples to him as he shook her hand and wished her a good day as they left the church.

Terry admits learning that Melba was the store’s lifeblood from corporate officials, family members of the Dillards, and personnel.

Melba decided to retire after having to miss a few weeks of work owing to health issues. She recognized that she

wasn’t performing at her peak anymore and made the decision that it was time to retire. She claimed

that she was unable to drive and that none of her pals were still employed by Dillard’s. Melba was acclaimed, but some felt sorry for her.

When Melba decided to retire, her friends, coworkers, and superiors threw her a farewell party,

and many of them spoke lovely things about her that made her cry. The vice president of Dillard, Drue Methany,

who has known Melba for 65 years, lauded her for her friendships and volunteer activities in the community by saying:

When I would visit her, I would see her wearing makeup and thought, ‘I wish I could be like that.’ She still has a fantastic rapport with people.

According to Terry, her mother and Mr. and Mrs. Dillard were good friends. The Dillards excused Melba from working night shifts and Sundays in her later years because they loved her so much.

Melba coached a lot of people, according to James Saez, the shop manager at Dillard’s, and inspired them to go higher. According to James, Melba set a high standard for Dillard’s customer service.

Terry recognized that despite being older, Melba still worked 40 hours every week. Even in the winter and bad weather,

when her mother worked four eight-hour days in her 70s and 80s, he would make the trip and pick her up.

People who read about Melba’s life online praised her as a ‘inspiration’ and ‘role model’ for youngsters, declaring,

‘She must have liked and loved her work to be dedicated like that; she had what almost everyone wanted; I adore her.’

Despite the praise, some people felt sorry for Melba because she had worked all her life. Somebody said:

The most depressing story I’ve recently heard is this one. She has worked her entire life and decides to retire as she approaches the end of it. That’s awful.

Another user claimed that Melba’s story is a sad reality for many Americans because the United States lacks a robust welfare system that supports people in their retirement.

If they don’t work, there is no pay. Older people are compelled to work rather than reap the benefits of their effort.

For more than 70 years, Melba loved her career and had nothing but positive things to say about it.

She merely advised individuals just starting out in the industry to appear often and never treat it only

as a source of income. Melba also exhorted people to stay in the locations where God had put them.
