37-year-old Simon Marks discovered something rather peculiar. He’s been in the same house for a while,
but it wasn’t until recently that he discovered he didn’t know everything about the house he bought many years ago.
He was trying to park his car one day when he came across what he believed was a flowerbed. The wheels
of his car were stuck, and he could hear strange crackling sounds coming from the driveway.

Well, he reasoned, ‘This day couldn’t get any worse.’ The driveway stones were cracked, and the driver started to give way,
Marks found when he crouched down to look closer. Paver breaks made a remarkable finding possible.

After removing all of it, he found a piece of metal beneath the earth. Unaware of what might be hiding beneath the driveway,
Marks grabbed the metal piece and tried to pull it out. He continued to look around to learn more about the strange creature.
He asked his father for help because he didn’t know what to do, and the two of them were able to remove a substantial
portion of the densely packed muck, which eventually created an entrance. The two men down an old, rusted ladder there to see where it would lead them.

When my father saw it, he recognized it as an air raid bunker, Marks recalled. There are a lot in this area, we learned when we searched for it online.
They found a bunker in Marks’ yard that appeared to have been built during World War II.
‘The previous owner had to be aware of it, and he had to fill it in when he built the house and a garden,’ Marks continued.

These shelters were constructed to shield inhabitants from bombardment during the conflict. It is thought that Sir John Anderson created them.
The exterior of one wall is bricked up. We don’t know, but I’m 90% positive we won’t learn about any further rooms.
Marks surmised that one of the walls may have been bricked up during construction to create room for the foundations.
We’ll just have to abandon it if that’s the case, he continued. His story quickly gained popularity as he shared pictures of his find.

The shelter is something Marks and his father want to restore since they think it’s an important historical site.
They contend that although though that time period in history is long past, it shouldn’t be forgotten because it provides us with a glimpse of what life was like at the time.
